The hair and clothes that you can get there can be addicting. Other than that I'd go to the sims resource website and just browse what they have. "Sim 1 and Sim 2 are having a heated argument in the street!" It's also funny to see the sim drama that unfolds sometime in the background. It's wonderful for making sure you don't end up with a town full of old people with no kids.
Sims get married, have kids, start careers, gain skills and move houses in the background while you play your main household. I actually haven't seen any new careers with story progression, but it is definitely a great mod to install.
